Our only form of connecting to the internet is through the use of a USB powered mobile broadband device. This translates into a smokin’ download speed of 0.75 mb/s (although we average about 60 Kbps, which is less than 1mb). In comparison most folks typically have a 10-15 mb/s internet connection speed.
SMD headquarters is located in a small town called Pearland, about halfway between Houston and Galveston, Texas. Trek out a few miles past Pearland and you get into County Roads, and LOTS of land. Not having really close neighbors allows for a lot of privacy, thus allowing us to concentrate harder and really focus on what we’re currently doing. However it also has a downside; the lack of internet providers. We thought about using satellite but in reality they wanted close to $400 a month for a 5 mb/s line. To make matters worse, they even restrict the amount of data you transfer every 24 hours. Not to mention that if there’s a bad thunderstorm, you don’t have internet.
No cable, no nearby wifi’s to hitch off of, and no DSL. The only option left was mobile broadband.
So instead of viewing this problem as a problem; we’re using it as an added advantage. Because we need to view and test your site on our connection, everything that CAN be optimized IS optimized.
